Day 395: Fried Fish & Pickled Turnip

An actual outing! The conservatory had their annual spring flower show with limited timed entry so we went to that and then went to H Mart. The flowers were pretty! It’s been so long since we’ve been on that part of town!

H Mart is way in the county but well west of us so it was actually a little quicker to get there from the conservatory than from our house.

We had been trying to clear space in the freezer so we could buy dumplings. We bought like 6 bags! It’s been a long time since we’ve had dumplings and it’s such an easy snack or meal. We also bought these wild looking “corn dogs” with fish sausage to try.

For lunch we picked up sushi from the sushi stand in the store. It was pretty good! I miss sushi!

Then for dinner Mart fried up some flounder we had in the freezer and served it with some pickled radish from the prepared section of H Mart. So good!

Day 385: Pesto

I had a corned beef scramble with the tiny bit of beef that was leftover for lunch.

For dinner the plan was ravioli with mushrooms but Matt didn’t feel well and the ravioli was moldy?! I guess the package got punctuated or something? So I tossed some regular pasta with jarred pesto, broccoli and mushrooms.

I’m teaching myself a new technique for weaving and we watched more Briarpatch. I’m not surprised it was was canceled! It’s oddly flat.

I had a last minute Whole Foods order delivered with some bland food for Matt for tomorrow and some veggies.

Day 379: Ribs & Rice

I had to go to my dad’s to drop off the candy we picked up for him and my brother for Easter and check on things around his house. My dad also picked up some crabmeat for me at the store that was on sale He’s near Costco (we aren’t) so I packed a cooler and went. Costco is always a little stressful! But I did find some It’s Its bars which I am excited about. I read about them years ago and they are just now being sold outside of California. I also got lamb and lobster tails for our anniversary tomorrow. I realize I got a rack of lamb for dinner, a lamb roast for Easter and we ordered lamb from Zahav to be delivered in early April. That’s a lot of lamb! Oh well! It can be really difficult to find here outside of early spring.

For lunch I picked up a sandwich/salad combo at Costco and Matt had some rotisserie chicken.

For dinner we had leftover beef ribs I sautéd with zucchini served over rice.

We started this new show from Luxembourg on Netflix that was pretty good. I really felt like the day got away from me! My dad doesn’t live that close and Costco took forever. It was also pouring down rain so I got soaked while loading up the car. Not fun.

Day 378: Pot Roast over Egg Noodles

For lunch I had some oil packed tuna with capers and leftover olive bread.

Our pughuahua didn’t feel well so I had to run to the store to get some chicken breast for her meals so I picked up some other groceries we were short on. Stores still don’t seem quite right and they don’t seem to carry my favorite sherbet any more!

For dinner I heated up our leftover pot roast and served it over egg noodles, finished off the cauliflower kugel too.

Watched the latest episode of Meurtres à… it wasn’t the best one! My French is really improving though!

Day 360: faux Cubano

Really sneaking up on a year here!

Actual outings today! I had to set up my dad with an online account to manage his vaccine appointment. We managed to do it via conference call but I ended up over there to pick up some mail he needed help with. He made oatmeal chocolate muffins and sent me home with some.

I really needed soda (I know!) and was going to do curbside at Target or delivery but thought it might be better to go in since I was in the suburbs anyway and it was early. I drove up and Michael’s was deserted so I dashed in there first and got some yarn and warp thread. It was weird being in an actual store and almost browsing! It was nice being able to see the colors in real life.

Then went to Target and got soda, Easter candy and odds and ends Aldi doesn’t sell.

I came home and Matt made sort of Cuban sandwiches with the leftover pork, pickles and onions with gruyere. And we ate the haggis chips we got back when we ordered Matt’s Scottish oatmeal. They were quite good!

We were stuffed after lunch so we had a bagged salad (a new one from Aldi with avocado) and poppy seed and pumpernickel bagels (half each) we froze and the last of lox. So good!! That Russ & Daughters order was great.

More French mysteries, according to Wikipedia we are watching them in some crazy order and I can’t find one of them on the list but it was good to see more about the actors and locations. Some looked really familiar.

Enjoying the Maintenance Phase podcast. The snake oil one has been best so far.

Day 358: Ham Chowder

Big trip to Aldi today!! I wrote about it here. It was weird being around so many people. I hadn’t shopped in person since 12/9/20. Now all the St Patrick’s Day goodies were out. Our fridge is so full.

Doing these mega shops is time consuming and a little exhausting so I put up some ham chowder in the slow cooker before I left. I picked up a take and bake pizza so we had that for lunch then had the soup for dinner.

We tried the 1989 Bloodhounds on Broadway (Netflix dvd) and it was awful! We watched a little more of the French mysteries too. I really don’t think they are a series in France the way they are here. They all have different titles. Maybe it’s a “Monday night movie” type thing like we had decades ago.

Day 351: Mortadella Sandwiches

We needed some Italian ingredients so Matt went to the local Italian market and got groceries and sandwiches! Sandwiches someone other than us made! We got what they started calling the “Matt special”—mortadella, tomato, olive spread, aged provolone. So good. It’s funny because it was actually my order to begin with but he liked it and we ordered it so much in the before times and he was the one who’d pick them up after he had class that they started calling it after him.

For dinner we had some Italian bread, and leftover wild rice with collard greens topped by fried eggs.

We watched a couple of DVDs from Netflix. Kajillionare and Bill and Ted Face the Music what a combo! I felt like I wasted some hours there. At least they were both short. Miranda July had one movie we liked and then they’ve all been rough since.

Day 273: Pizza & Steelhead Trout

I did a huge shop at Aldi this morning. I brought home a take and bake pizza for lunch.

Since we had a big lunch I made a small steelhead trout filet to split and some miso glazed hakurei turnips with their greens and some added spinach. I’m excited that Aldi has been having more fresh fish.

I made toffee for my dad. He’s been experimenting with flavoring his coffee with actual nuts and candy (?) so I thought he might like it. I’m dropping off his Christmas present and picking up some odds and ends on Friday so I thought it was a good day to make it. It turned out pretty good!

We are powering through Perry Mason on HBO Max. I never saw the original so it’s all new to me.

Day 258: Turkey Empanadas

For lunch I made chipotle turkey acorn squash empanadas with leftover turkey. Highly recommend!

For dinner we had some mortadella sandwiches. Matt made a run to the Italian store for Thanksgiving supplies and got the ingredients.

I spent a long time at the bank doing paperwork. It was all though the drive thru so I’m glad it wasn’t very cold!

We caught up on Death in Paradise and Fargo.

Day 254: Meatloaf & Thrown together sandwiches

For lunch I made us sandwiches with flat bread, leftover chicken tenders, the dregs of a container of feta, Trader Joe’s garlic spread, cherry tomatoes (from October!), cucumber and the lettuce leftover from the salads yesterday.

For dinner I made meatloaf and we had baked potatoes stuffed with sautéed spinach.

The roofers were still here most of the day but it’s done now and looks good! We picked blue shingles which looks nice.

I went to Weis and picked up some odds and ends that I can’t get at Aldi. Mostly canned soup, pasta, bricks of cheddar, bread and cottage cheese. Here’s hoping we don’t have to shop any time soon! The freezer is packed so we should be in good shape if things get really bad and we don’t want to go out at all.

We started the Crown. I’m sad my mom didn’t get to see this season, it’s getting to a time when she’d really remember and she wasn’t much older than Diana.
